Well now that the contest is over it appears that I've solved the 
problem.  From the advice of N4ZR, Pete, I rebuilt my logcfg.dat file 
starting from bare bones and adding stuff one at a time until it failed. 
 It didn't!  I put all the same stuff back in the logcfg.dat and now it 
works!  There must have been something corrupt in my original file that 
only showed itself in the SS contest setup.

So I guess it just goes to show you...Murphy is alive and well and doing 
quite well screwing things up in my computer!
