I saw a very similar thing on a flaky 386 machine at W7RM during IARU.  We
re-installed it and the problem went away.  I can't tell you what was
wrong, but I know it cleared up with a new installation.  We were also
getting run-time error 100 or 103, but I'm not sure which.
