I've been thinking of working on a box like this myself, hopefully
incorporating a band decoder too..  

What's the coding for the band data port?  I assume it's BCD, but the
cross-coding to bands isn't obvious.

I was thinking of using ULN2003 Darlington driver ICs.  This is basically
seven Darlington pairs with a common emitter connection, a catch diode (for
driving inductive loads) with a common anode connection, and separate base
and collector leads for each pair.  Planning on hooking the common emitter
to the strobe pin.  Am I going to regret trying this?
