This NAQP effort is not much better than the last one. TRLog and I will have
to have a chat about memory usage. Started off fine, although RF was a
problem, particularly on 20 and 15. Started sending things I have no idea
what. A quick raid on the local RS and I cleaned them out of RF chokes (all
varieties) and started slapping them on cables. The problem appeared mostly
to be a keyboard issue, so it got two plus some cable snugs. Finally! A
functional station, and only 3 hours into the contest. Oops. Time for
church. Back 3 hours later, and memory becomes an issue.
No longer will TRLog look at the TRMASTER database for partials, or initial
exchange. RATS! OK, run in DOS mode (like the manual says -- duh!). No
changes. I've got 64 meg of memory that the program is (probably) only seeing
402k. This will have to be worked on at some point. Surely someone has made
the program work in a DOS window in Win95/98. Or can tell me how to enable
memory that TRLog can use if I run in MS-DOS mode.
OH, I had to convert to Win98. No choice. Believe it or not, it was a
hardware issue when the controller died on an older model motherboard.
Couldn't reinstall win95 because I had upgraded internet explorer to 4.01.
Couldn't reinstall Win95 ver B -- no provision for upgrade, only a fresh
install. In order to preserve my 4 gig of hard drive files, I had to install
Win98.
I'll probably end up getting a little box just for the radio stuff. Perhaps a
laptop ...

Subject: [TRLog] NONSSB Solved
Message-ID: <199808022022.PAA01004@isd7.tdec.state.tn.us>
Regarding the IC-765 "NONSSB" problem --
The problem appears to occur when the radio's CI-V interface
is in the "transceive" mode. I turned it OFF, (DIP switch S37,
slot #2) and preliminary tests indicate that the problem is solved.
Oddly, TR doesn't mind the "transceive" mode being engaged
for the IC-761. It only seems to cause a problem on the IC-765.
I'm going to set both radios to OFF, in hopes of avoiding any
problems in the future. This might be worth mentioning in the manual,
since the IC-765's factory default mode is transceive ON. In my
case, it needs to be turned OFF for TR-Log to work successfully.
Of course, everyone owns MPs now, so who cares about ancient Icoms... :-)
Of course, I figured all this out today, the day AFTER the contest. :-(
It drove me completely nuts all through the CW NAQP, until I finally
just unplugged the radio interface and went without it. (When will
I learn to troubleshoot everything BEFORE the contest?) Hopefully
I'll be good to go for the next round of fun.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and ideas.

Often, the multiplier check isn't really necessary and causes more
problems than it solves. I have tried to clean it up for most of
the contests, but some of the more "oddball" contests are not so good.
You should have your original log still (look for .001 extension).

OK Kirk, now you tell me...after the contest....hi
I was too lazy to open the 765 covers and check the TRANSCEIVE switch
setting like you, Tree and I have discussed... before the contest that
is !!
The NONSSB occurred quite a bit but never really 'hung me up'...
So you can bet I will get that cover off before the next contest!!
This is first NAQP I ran with TR....This is the only way to go, the
name/qth popping up was great during some of the weaker signal work to
cross-check what I received....!! Thanks Tree....and when working same
guys on other bands, NO SWEAT !!

Well - I think I can send this 765 back to N7TR (thanks again Rich).
Unless someone from Reno will be at the NCCC meeting next week (where
I am giving a talk on the Sprint). Sounds like the NONSSB problems
are cured by turning off the transceive function. I have looked
at the data K5PN sent me with the failure and it seems that the
radio is confused and sending me bogus data. I have tried to make
TR smart enough not to get confused, but it sounds like turning
off the transceive feature is the right answer. I will get this
added to the manual eventually.
Also, the FT-847 (the 160 to 450 MHz box) is working with TR now.
However, you will need a firmware update from Yaesu to make it work.
A sample radio was sent to me and I have confirmmed that it worked.
I have been QRL working on some software the ARRL is using for log
checking. This has taken a few of the cycles that I had available
for TR. I hope to have this current project completed by the end of
this week. Then, I will be off to W6 land for a week, and then back
home for another week without the family (they are in W6 land now for
a total of three weeks).
My e-mail inbox is at record high levels - so if you have sent me
a question recently and I haven't responded, please keep be patient.
I hope to be caught up by the end of the month.

I often find it very useful to let TR-Log "re-work" the
contest using the TR READ command to ensure that
all the points and mults are correct.

Your computer may not have a PC speaker or it may have

Sure enough, as soon as you ask the question you find the answer. Story of my
life.
According to http://www.annoyances.org/ (the windows annoyances page,
performance and troubleshooting section), simply deleting the dblspace.bin and
drvspace.bin files from c:\ and windows\command did the trick. TRLog (and
other dos programs) now have a healthy 605K to play with.
Sorry to bug everyone!

Whoa, slow down a second. If you simply want to rid your computer of these files,
this will work, but if the drives are dblspaced, this will cause you all
sorts of grief.
Having never used it, I'm not sure how to remove it. If I recall
corecttly, at least up to 95A, the only way was to re-format the HD, I
think 95b allowed an uninstall. I don't think it was possible with any
earlier versions of DOS tho.

Two questions for the list:
1) Testing out TR for the WAE CW this weekend...Seems like the QTC
feature only sends QSO's that have scrolled off the screen (i.e. LOG.DAT)
and does not consider the QSO's in the window (LOG.TMP?)...
Does that mean I need to do a ALT-U to send the most up to date stuff?
Seems kind of crazy to have to do that? Am I doing something wrong?
2) Anyone running TR in DOS mode on a Win98 computer? I wanted to check
whether it's ok to upgrade from Win3.1 before I mess up the radio
computer i.e.- not being able to use my favorite pgm :)
3) Decided to go with 1" x 2 5/8" labels for the QSL card. Got 3000
labels (Avery 5160) for about $20 at Office Max. Interesting idea that
came to me was to remove the QSO report block from the QSL, heck it will
just be covered up on 99.9% of the cards anyways! The small number of
non-label cards that get sent out can be hand-written.

I am running TRLog in a DOS window under WIN98. While on whole WIN98 seems
to be much better behaved overall than WIN95, every setup is different. For
the jump from WIN3.1 to WIN98 I would set aside the whole weekend, this is
not a trivial project! I had been running TRLog under WIN95 for 2 years and
I had a lot of problems in the beggining. THe Jump from WIN95 to WIN98 was
rather painless. As always do a backup before you start. If you would like
send me a private E-mail and I will send you my home phone if you get in
trouble, or we could actually make a sked !17M or 15M would probably be best.

There's more. If the drive is doublespaced, the best way to disable it is
to "unmount" it. Unfortunately the DOS 6 manual is of no help on this
point, and refers you to online help, so I can't give any further details
as I've since changed to Win 95.
After deleting the doublespace files from my PC a few years ago, my PC
still acted strange. I tracked this down to a new partition (I:) which had
been created in addition to C:, by the doublespace installation process,
and in fact the computer was booting from this new partition.
Using Norton Utilities, I deleted the I: partition, resized C: to reclaim
the lost cylinders, and made C: bootable again. The process was easy,
although C: had to be reformatted. I believe you can do the same thing with
Partition Magic, without having to reformat.
Soon afterwards it all became academic, because I bought a large hard disk.
Hope the above sheds some light.

Wow! What can I say, but Wow! What a program!
Friday evening, I was fooling around the radio and thought I
would check out TR Log in WAE. Maybe even play in the contest
for a couple of hours....
This was my first WAE in many years. The last was while I was
still doing paper logging and I can recall the paperwork headache
that QTC's posed for me then.
What a neat, neat program, Tree!
There were a couple of hiccups during the contest when getting
ready to send the QTC nn/nn message, but I need to sit down with
TR Log and try to make them happen again...90 percent sure it was
me, though... as usual.
One question, though, Tree/George/Anyone...
It happened that I sent a string of 7 QTC's to a station. He
acknowledged them. I type "Y" to indicated they have been ack'ed
and to save them. They then disappeard from the screen.
Unfortunately, the station then asked for a fill ....
fortunately, it was simply the callsign of one of the QTC's and I
happened to remember it. But, what if I hadn't been able to
recall it? Is there a quick way to see the QTC's just sent
displayed again? After I sent him the fill, wiped my brow in
relief, I realized that the only way I know is to go to DOS and
review the text file of QTC's. Is there an alternate method to
that?
hmmm...that wasn't one question, was it....oh well..sorry about
that.

Happened to me several times as well. I was trying not to use keyer at
all and it proved to be impossible. When in QTC mode you cannot send
anything using F10.
Can you do something about that, Tree? Also when the number of the
block of QTC (like 32/10) was not received, you cannot repeat it other
then with the keyer.
One more question: you cannot preview the entire QTC block prior to
sending it. If you happen to start sending QTC to DL0BD for instance and
one of the lines in that QTC block is the info about QSO with DL0BD the
program stops sending all the following lines. It looks like you
promised to send 10 QTC to your contact in the beginning but then
changed you mind and sent only 3 or 4. Yet the number that you have sent
in the beginning says something like 32/10. I know, it is probably
difficult to overcome but what about letting the operator to preview the
QTC and use the cursor to move around the QTC screen so that unwanted
line can be marked "do not send" or "repeat this line again" and the
header is formed only after previewing and marking.
Then couple of other things are already on the wish list like QTC on
networked computers (you can use only one computer for qtc. All the
others do not keep the track of what QTC were sent from the first
computer) and another one (I think #62 on the wish list) were you cannot
easily abort sending the QTS with ESC after pressing Ctrl+Q.
Anyway when all goes according to plan - great program. So easy to send
QTC that you get a real pleasure out of the process. Thank you for the
best-so-far logging program Tree.

I thought in a case like this that CTRL-Q sent "QTC 32/4 QRV?" and
you could only send DL0BD 4 QTCs even if you had 100 available.
That's the impression I got anyway.

I was wondering about something like this, but I just guessed that
the QTCs must be handled sequentially down the log without a LOT of
re-programming. That's why I thought the program sent 32/4 in the
example above.

Absolutely. The QTC feature works so well, it makes me wish other
contests besides the WAE had QTCs! :-)
I just wish condx had been better and I had been more motivated to
operate.... :-(

Good point, Igor.
When I read it in the rules DURING the contest (one of these days
I am going to be prepared for a contest!), I wasn't sure if that
had happened during any of the QTC's I had sent out earlier. I
never did see that happen. But, conceivably it could. Maybe the
software can be written to recognize that the QTC's are being
sent to a station whose call is in that group and skip over that
QTC to save it for transmission to another station later.
There's nothing in the rules saying the QTC's have to be sent in
any particular order...That way, it would be invisible to the
both operators and not require any special manipulation by the
sending operator. .
Also, I felt guilty as heck when I had to tell a Euro asking QTC?
that I was QRU, when, in fact, I had five QSO's right in front of
me. I realize the situation, but still felt a bit badly about
the 'lie.' Maybe there should be a guilt multiplier in this
contest!

Message-ID: <3.0.2.16.19980812034857.3aef6ab6@pop.asiaonline.net>
In YODX, I found that exchanges had to be logged in certain ways:
For non-YOs, RST zone or just zone works, but not zone RST.
For YOs, RST zone domestic or zone domestic works, but domestic alone does
not. Note that YOs don't transmit an ITU zone, just their domestic QTH &
therefore we have to log something other than what they send.
>From reading the description in the manual, I'd expect the RST Zone & Domestic
QTH to have a little more flexibility with what is to be entered & in what
order. Of course, YODX is one of those mainstream events I know is as much
of a highlight on everyone's contest calendar as it is on mine... ;^)
In WAE CW, I found that sometimes in S&P the call which would be inserted into
the call window would not clear after tuning past that point in the bandmap.
I don't recall this happening in YODX the previous weekend - perhaps somebody
can add to this admittedly poor data point.

To Tree, Geoiii, N4RO and the rest of the 765/TR owners as additional
evidence of problem 'fixed':
I finally changed the TRANSCEIVE setting in the 765 to OFF (yes, it was
set to ON), and after one night of calling CQ (via AUTO CQ) into a dead
band and other misc QSO's for a couple of hours, I never once caught
glimpse of that NONSSB popping up.
So, using TR 6.29 with the 765 set at 4800 baud, TRANSCEIVE set to OFF,
ICOM COMMAND DELAY to 300ms in TR, I seem to get solid and reliable
communications between the 765 and TR Log.
Thanks for the due diligence Tree in working thru this special case for
us ICOM users....

Now, if I can just get rid of all those 1's that show up as QTH because
I incorrectly merged the wrong character position into my TR Master
Database!!...and yes, I have long since erased the original logs with
the QTH's in them.....Wish list to Tree, why have the "1" (point-value)
show up in the General QSO mode?.....
Favorite feature: I really have enjoyed being able to call so many of
the DX stations by name when they return my CQ in everyday QSO
mode....makes it seem a little more personal...

Please don't take this as a personal slam, but after years of warnings in the
computer world concerning backing up, etc., and in these days of ridiculously
cheap media, what could possibly be the reason for not having an original of
every log kept somewhere?
I can't tell you the number of times I handled Field Day logs for a group I no
longer belong to wherein I had to merge several logs into one (for my purposes,
anyway) and the operation went awry somewhere or other (did I merge that 40CW
log, already?). Having the originals kept separately allowed me to start over.
Same thing if you ever change from one whiz bang general logger to another, or
just start using a whiz bang. Getting all those 'test logs in doesn't mean it's
okay to "pitch" the originals.
Ya never know.

If you are using TR-Log you just type the number key
for the zone that the station sends and the program
deletes the old zone and puts the new one in its place.
Yet another reason to use TR-Log. :-)

Thanks for the info. I may get brave and try 4800 baud now, but
1200 seems fast enough. (It ain't broke...)

This is exactly what makes it the obvious choice.

Allan:
Make sure you are using a standard serial cable and not a null modem
cable (with pin 2 connected to pin 3 and vice versa) - some early
editions of the Omni-VI manual indicated, incorrectly, that pin 2 should
be wired to pin 3 and vice versa for computer rig control. It should be
straight serial port, pin 2 to pin 2 and pin 3 to pin 3.
If this is not the solution, give me a call at work during the week at
(800) 833-7373 and I'll look up some of my documentation I have
stashed there to get the radio and TR chatting to each other.

Grant,
Here are the four lines from my logcfg.dat file for my Omni VI+.
RADIO ONE CONTROL PORT=SERIAL 3
RADIO ONE TYPE=IC765
RADIO ONE RECEIVER ADDRESS=44
RADIO ONE BAUD RATE=1200
You'll need to set up the rig address to 44 and the baud rate to 1200. I
just use a standard modem cable. Works great!

Subject: [TRLog] MFJ Voice Keyer Interface
Message-ID: <35D85722.83C@bellsouth.net>
I have sucessfully interfaced the MFJ 432 to my lapop computers for use
with TR-Log!
There were two problems with this device and the solutions are:
1. Severe hum and feedback when powering the unit from radio power.
Solution: Jumper (short out) L6 - a ground return choke in series
with the mic and ptt ground leads. This appeared
to be an attempt to keep RF out, but what good is
it if you can't even use the unit before the TX is
enabled??
2. Only DVK channel 1 would key when interfaced directly to the computer
parallel port.
Solution: Put 1N914 diodes in series with keying lines to DVK
channels 1,2 & 4 (not channel 3) from the computer
parallel port. It is possible that the diode on
channel 4 may not be needed either, but 1 & 2 are
a must!
Reasoning: The internal inputs of these keying lines have diodes
from Channel 2 to 1, Channel 3 to 2. This causes
a path back to ground through the parallel interface
causing the fired input to be held
"low" through the internal diodes and prevent the firing
channels from reaching a high enough logic level to work.
I have this setup on two laptops and keyers. They perfomed perfectly
during the NAQP SSB contest this weekend.

Howdy folks!
I would be interested in hearing from anyone using TR on a laptop with packet, keying, and transceiver control. What PCMCIA card(s) have you found works best for providing the additional serials ports for all three activities?
Thanks!

I am sorry - this was a bug introduced by me adding the FT847. It
will be easy to fix in the next release. You might find that saying
FT890 will work in the meantime (or FT900).

Yes - I have become more aware of this issue recently. I am not sure
that I can make TR deal with those high of baud rates. Since I am not
using IRQs, I am polling the serial ports. My poll rate isn't fast
enough to use the higher baud rates. However, I have also learned that
most of the newer computers have buffers in the serial port chips and
this would solve the problem. I will see if I can add this speed and
you can test it for me.
One feature I did add was to disable polling during PTT. This is
available on the Control-J menu and might also solve the problem.
Thanks for bringing these issues to my attention.

Hi,
Jack W1WEF has been making selling a CW interface for
several years now. He builds it all inside a D-shell
so it makes for a really neat package.
Just before Dayton this year I talked him into
building them with PTT and paddle inputs.
So if you are looking for a CW interface and
you dont want to build your own - Jack will
do it for you.
You can buy them directly from him or from me.
CW output only - $23
CW & PTT - $35
CW,PTT & paddle - $49
Plus $3 shipping.

Subject: [TRLog] WAE Bugs/requested enhancements
Message-ID:
Bugs:
1) TR will send DUPLICATE QTC's if there are zero point QSO's in the log
(e.g. dupes) and the program is exited and restarted. It appears to read
the qtclist.dat file to determine how many QTC's it has sent and to whom.
Unfortunately, it uses the total as the current location for sending QTC's
in the log.
Suggestion: Also check the last entry in QTC.dat, find that QSO, and
reset the QTC pointer.
2) TR will act squirrely after the "Please send some QTC's,
QTC memory is getting full" warning. It eventually satarted sending
garbage for QTC's, despite my best efforts to send some. :-)
Using TR READ to re-work the contest with a large log causes a core dump.
I suspect this is related.
There is a workarund for re-starting the program...check the last QTC
sent (qtc.dat) and send a series of "fake" QTC's to re-send the
duplicates. This messes up the QTC sent number, but Oh well...
Enhancement Requests:
1) It is FAR too easy to blow away a QTC. Using TR, we just hit
to do everything. Then the program asks "Did *** QSL QTC ***/**?
(Y/N):" orsomething similar. Quess what does? It blows
away the entire QTC! This needs to insist on Y/N. Yes, I had to
turn off the radio and re-sent that QTC to nobody!
2) We need to be able to review the QTC just sent, and get the
number (like 172/10) after sending a QTC. Exiting the program to
check QTC.dat causes WAY too much trouble since the QTC's get out
of sync. (Seethe bugs above).
Thanks, Tree! Great program. PLEASE fix these bugs...I complained
about the duplicate QTC's after the 1997 WAE!

Mark

Hi, everybody
I've been using TR (5.73) for 2 years very successfully. Recently I bought
DVP by K1EA with the cable from LZ Engineering. I went through all steps
which are shown in TR and DVP manuals, but DVP isn't working. TR shows 'DVP
on' but hangs after 'Alt 1-5'
I'm using PC 486DX, DVPTSR 1.03 (which I found among TR's files: default IRQ
7, port address 308h, software int 60h) and FT1000MP.
1. Have anybody tried to use TR 5.73 with DVP ?
2. What IRQ and address DVP uses ?
3. Have I to use additional (or other) TSR program or buy newer TR (or CT) ?
I'm looking forward for any reply

I would not think TR would care whether you where on either FAT16 or FAT32...

I don't think it would care either. All of the disk stuff is done

I do this often. Just give TR the serial port of your modem.
Use your terminal emulation program (or control-B) to dial
up your ISP and then telnet to the cluster (cluster.akron.net
works). TR will then just think it is talking to a TNC.

We used it as PI4ZLD. I had to do some extra configs, but it worked fine.

Subject: [TRLog] Cum Multiplier Trigger With New .DOM Files
Message-ID: <5bd901ea.35e82426@aol.com>>
I have created a number of new .DOM files to support state QSO parties not
covered by TRLOG. Obviously they are mainly county lists. I have had no
problem having them appear as new mults in the log portion of the screen the
first time worked but invariably there will be a half dozen or so that will
not increment the cum mult status at the top of the screen. I have even seen
one decrement one instead of incrementing one even though showing as a new
mult on the log portion of the screen. Since they are in the log I'm sure POST
will count them correctly but it sure would be nice to have the correct totals
during the contest. Any suggestions? I'm using v. 6.0. TNX.

I haven't seen any other answers.
I think you have 2 problems. First, I think that with Windows 95 you
will have to use TR to talk to the modem so that the port assignments
are done correctly. I have never used Windows 95 so maybe that is not
true. The second problem is that it sounds like you are using a PPP or
SLIP connection to connect. TR can't use that. It would be trivial to
work around this with a more powerful or multiuser operating system,
but since Windows 95 is not multiuser I think there is no easy way to
talk out one port and log into another. Two solutions are:
1. Get a "shell" account from your ISP. Typically this means you
connect through the modem using TR to an account on a machine at your
ISP, and then telnet from a command prompt there to wherever you want.
I believe this is what Tree was describing.
2. Set up another computer to act as your shell account. The cheap way
to do this is to use old 386 with 100MB of disk and 4MB of memory and
run linux. A cheap 14K modem will be fine for this purpose. I have
done this for various things and the easiest way to set it up is
to borrow a keyboard and video card/monitor and either a CDROM drive or
ethernet card to load the operating system. Once you are running you
remove the CD or ethernet card, keyboard and possibly the video card,
and tell the bios that you don't have a keyboard or video (some bioses
require a video card, but in that case it can be any old card to make
the bios happy; you definitely don't need a monitor). When you want to
use it, you just turn it on and let it boot up. You then log in through
a serial port from TR and fire up your PPP connection and telnet. Since
TR is talking to the telnet connection everything will work fine.
Anyone familiar with linux/unix can set this up in about an hour.
I hope this helps,

More info on my problem. Turns out when the cum mult status doesn't increment
even though the screen shows a new mult, when that entry scrolls off the
screen the mult disappears! PA has standard three letter abbreviations for
their 67 counties that they use for their QSO Party. As a test, I entered all
67 in order and all 67 showed as mults on the screen but only 57 showed in the
cum mult status. I did a CTRL L at the end to review the log and lo and behold
ten mults had disappeared from the mult column even though they showed on the
screen when logged. I then just used those ten mults and the entry showed a
new mult for each one but the cum showed zero. Again, when I did a CTRL L at
the end all ten mults had disappeared from the mult column. Sorry for the
previous wrong info. Tree/George, any ideas?

It would be trivial to work around this with a more powerful or multiuser
operating system,
What would really be nice is to have Trlog use the winsock interface to do
this. I know it would be some coding but it would be a real enhancement. If
that were done you would not have to mess with these other things.

Do not use Windows Internet utilities.
Just type Ctrl+B in TR.
Then type
ATDP 123456789
or something else to connect your ISP, input login and password, then
type
telnet cluster.acron.net
Then enter DXCluster. After such long procedure type Ctrl+B again.
This works OK here.
Question to Tree:
If you do this often, maybe simple script will help? Such feature will
be great especially for hams with bad phone lines so they have to
redial ISP very often.
Another note:
Some of ISPs do not allow telnet to run. Or directly switch on PPP
or SLIP after succesfully entered password...
We can use W95 built-in telnet application or use Netscape/IE. We
can use DXMon or DXTelnet, but there is no possibility to transfer
DX info to TR-LOG.

The main reason TR doesn't support the PACC contest is because
nobody has even been able to tell me what the rules are in
PA. I only see the outside PA rules in QST.

Thanks George for the reminder. When I did a lot of re-writing of .DOM files to
emulate a geographic map, I ran into that problem. I had originally done it for
SS, which because it is strictly domestic does not call a .CTY file, works just
fine with all caps. Recalling that success, I tried to do an all cap one for
ARRL 160 which does call a .CTY file. It definitely didn't work.
Take a look at FCONTEST.PAS to see which contests are domestic only. However,
to avoid confusion, it is probably best to follow the mixed caps/lower case
guidelines referenced in the manual. Basically, you need to have at least one
lower case letter in all mult IDs in the .DOM files in order for the display
and counter to work properly; just like George said.

I'm trying to set QSO point values for the WA state Salmon Run (rules
http://www.wwdxc.org). The rules state this:
QSO POINTS
2 for SSB, 3 for CW and 6 for Novice/Tech CW
(There is NO Bonus for N/T on SSB) - Novice/Techs sign /N or /T.
Now, I can set the 2/SSB, 3/CW, but is there any way for TR to recognize
the /N or /T and give that QSO 6?
The .dom files are written and work, and I have a logcfg.dat file that
works except for that one minor scoring problem.
Thanks and 73

--------------------
Hi Everybody.
I'm here just to describe an experience, which might be useful to somebody else.
The object is: importing DX spots from a DXCluster directly into TR logging software, without using any TNC but connecting the DX cluster via the Internet.
I think this can be VERY useful for some contest teams when no local DXCluster is available.
I was able to perform the link using two programs connected each other via a serial port: TR and DXTelnet (DXTelnet download site:
http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/wd4ngb/telnet.htm ).
DXTelnet is a DXer oriented telnet application which can connect to a certain number of DXClusters (EU US and others) via an Internet connection, then routes the received DX spots to any other program via a serial port link.
This can be done not only with ordinary DXClusters but also with OH2BUA web cluster (thanks to the included DXPlorer program which periodically refreshes the spots from OH2BUA with a push technology).
I made specific and successful tests with TR in this case.
The nice thing is that you have two ways to link DXTelnet to TR.
An hardware saving way and a full professional way.
The first way requires ONLY one free serial port on a single PC. You have to make a dummy connector with some bridged pins to plug into a free serial port.
I made this with a DB9 female connector with pins 2-3 and 4-6-8 shortened.
If the PC connector is a DB25, the pins to shorten are 2-3 and 5-6-20.
I first created a directory in my PC named C:\DXHUNTER then went into DX-Telnet, choosed "Configuration" then "Links" then enabled the "Enable Link" check box then saved and restarted DXTelnet. In my case the comm port to use for the link was COMM1 so I edited the DXT2LOG.INI file (included in the DXTelnet package) and set the proper comm port address to &H3F8 (the hex I/O address for COMM1). Then I started a DOS SHELL under win 95 and started the DXT2LOG.EXE TSR program (included in the DXTelnet package). In the same DOS shell I started TR right after (TR configured to receive on COMM1) and got the DX spots received by DXTelnet into TR: fantastic! One may say that TR does not like to run under a win DOS Shell for some functions, such as CW keying.
I perfectly agree, but here comes the second way to link the two programs. The second way requires two separate PCs: a DOS one, running TR and a Windows one, running DXTelnet.
The two PCs must have one free serial port each: one for TR and one for DXTelnet; the two ports being linked via a null modem standard cable. In DXTelnet you need to activate the link by choosing "Configuration" then "Aux Comm" then set the proper comm port value and check the "Enable Com Port" check box then save quit and restart. With this link all the traffic received by DXTelnet is sent to TR and what you type from TR is sent to DXTelnet: Fantastic!. And you don't loose performance on TR cause it's running on a dedicated PC!!!
You can also get a remote link by replacing the null modem cable with a couple of TNCs and radios: this in case the Internet link is not immediately available at the contest shack but at a few miles away.
I'm sure this combination can be an interesting tool for your (and mine) next contests .
Best Regards and 73s
Nino
