[TRLog] TRLog Simulator

I'm sure the following is probably old hat for many, but I don't recall
seeing anyone comment on this or even hearing of anyone doing this....

My computer (an old 286) for the radio is under the radio desk.  While using
the TRLog simulator, I had to lean over and strain to hear calling
'stations' a bit more clearly.  I finally wised up and turned off the
computer, pulled out the 3.5" plastic blank cover, drilled two holes in it,
mounted a phone jack and toggle switch, wired them up and cut and
interconnected the speaker line and speaker with the switch and phone jack.

The first try nearly blew my eardrums out! (don't try this at home, kids!!
Parental guidance is advised)

I plugged in an empty stereo phone plug and, using a pot and alligator clip
leads, adjusted the pot for more tolerable volume.  Later, I'll decide
whether to add the pot or simply put in a suitable resistor once I've found
a comfortable audio level.  At the higher audio levels that I've tried, I
found that I was missing dits in s's and h's and 5's.  Whether it was from
the high audio level or the extraneous thumping the headphones were making
at that level, I don't know, but I seem to copy better at the lower audio
levels.

The toggle switch (spdt, center off) switches the speaker on/headphones off,
speaker and headpones off, or speaker off/headphones on.

It works real well.  And the phone jack and toggle switch fit nicely on the
3.5" blank.
