Ah, but this is not a good way to use the index. In fact, I should put 
something like the following somewhere early in the next version of the 
manual.

"If you want to find a function quickly, the quickest way to do it is to 
look in the index under the various alt- and ctrl- commands. Each one of 
those entries gives a short description of the command. Remembering this 
can save you a lot of frustration when you want to locate a command and 
can't find the "obvious" word in the index."

In the example you quote, I found the alt-= command listed as "alt-= Toggle 
sidetone" in (literally) less than five seconds.
