I used one this past phone SS, with good results. "Normally" with SBDVP
and my SB16 sound card, the microphone input feeds through to the output,
but that leaves you no way of setting the mike and recording levels
separately. If you use the microphone jack on the front of the Rigblaster,
then you need a way of switching the PTT line in the Rigblaster to let talk
with the mike as necessary. I rigged my footswitch that way, while leaving
the TR PTT output connected to the back of the radio as before. That
worked pretty well, except that I had to remember to release the footswitch
after I gave the call-sign and serial number, hit [enter] and the program
began sending the body of the exchange. A few times, while a little
drowsy, I'd just sit there looking at the radio with no sound coming out
till I realized!
For recording replacement messages on the fly, I rigged a toggle switch so
that I could feed my main mike audio either to the mic input on the SB-16
or to the Rigblaster (normal). This required a snap-on toroid and a few
turns right at the sound card to prevent RF getting into the mic input. I
believe this is much superior to recording with a separate mike unless you
have two with identical characteristics.
About the only real annoyance is that there is no smooth way of monitoring
what you have recorded while staying off the air. Sometime in the future I
may replace that toggle switch with a DPDT so that I can choose to route
the audio out of the Rigblaster to my headphones rather than to the
transceiver. That probably will involve a level issue.... In the meantime
you can turn up the volume on the sound card's speakers and listen that way.
The Rigblaster is a well-designed, well-built interface. Just a happy
customer...
