No comment on your first issue, but you're on the right track with this
one.  I've had very similar experiences with at least two different
laptops in a multi network--when any of the power saving functions kick
on, the laptop stops acknowledging data from multi network.  On one of the
laptops, I was never able to defeat all the power saving functions
completely, so the only solution was that someone had to at least make a
key stroke or two every 30 minutes.
