Having started all this off(!), perhaps I may be permitted a few
words. What Don and Fred have said is perfectly correct, CQ is a
commercial undertaking, which frankly, if it were not fro the
contests would have been out of business years ago, since, if
for no other reason, the content is otherwise close to
worthless, even by today's dumbed down standards.
Putting on my ( former) professional hat, the copyright issue is
reasonably clear. Anyone may "supply" limited extracts of a
journal to individuals for " private research or study". The
word limited here is generally taken to mean, in the
professional context, one article or subset thereof, from a
monthly issue. Thus in my latter day role as a technical
information officer doing, amongst other things research of
scientific journals in the field of chemistry, I was able to
supply copies to our research chemists. Taking on board
technology, our legal eagles were reasonably comfortable with
limited internal publishing on an intra-net.
However I guarded this privilege jealously, and would not permit
some of the things that my "users" would have liked, to make
their life easier, rather than mather their boss to spend the
company cash on a subscription for their particular laboratory.
Demand invariably outstripped supply as it often does in such
situations!
The rules for journals is even more relaxed, and free cross
publication is accepted on a similar basis to that described
above, so long as acknowledgement is always given. This is
called " making the world go around" ! Thus Don is never in any
jeopardy with what he does in RadCom, although possibly I and
the providers of this admirable reflector, could be judged more
harshly. I am quite comfortable with what I have done so far,
but would not go further in the short term.
So yes, if you want to see your detailed results you really
should bite the bullet and subscribe to CQ, or else enter other
contests where the results are always in the public domain. In
this context perhaps I could mention the forthcoming WAE
contests, first class in every way, and for which you receive a
copy of the results, mailed to your QTH about 9 months after the
event ( available on the Web earlier).
Please remember the old maxim, if you don't like the message,
don't shoot the messenger.
Having said all the above, I am happy to try and assist any
individual on a private one-to-one basis.
