There was in fact an SSB FD in 2001, which would make it:

FD  96   97  98  99  00 01 02   (Number of entrants)

CW 80  70  62  60  54   -   42
SB  44  38  38  39  40  23  32

I would agree there is a steady fall in CW FD participation, but it is clear
that the biggest fall in both Field Days in recent years has been the
dramatic effect of Foot & Mouth in 2001.
I would suggest that it is too soon to conclude that SSB FD is losing
ground, or that there should be a mixed-mode event.
