I have installed these cables on several laptops and had no problems. Just
follow the instructions that come with the cable and all will be well.  The
basic steps are.
Plug in the usb/serial cable to the usb port
Switch on the laptop
The 'Found New Hardware' screen will come up
Use the disk or CD supplied with the adaptor when asked to by windows
The PC will automatically allocate the next available free Com port number
to the new device.  In most cases this will become Com2.
