I wouldn't want to get too embroiled in the current NFD/FD rules debate,
but was amused by Jim's comment about "average radios". A totally
unscientific straw-poll of contest stations (that I can think of in my
head!)
suggests that the FT-1000MP (with its admittedly limited second receiver
feature) is very much the (serious) contester's "average radio" these days.

The first NFD that I ever took part in involved a home-brew 10w TX and
an HRO receiver. Technology moves on, and so should the rules. The
Big Knob, Little Knob rule for NFD is fine.

PS: As I am only Nr 3 Op/official tea-maker for G-0AAA/p, I am not allowed
to
operate either the Big Knob or the Little Knob; only Nr 1 Op & Nr 2 Op do
that.
