G3UEG, G3SVL and myself will be operating P3F (from 5B4AGN's QTH) in the CQWW160 SSB
contest this coming weekend.
There is a quite a long history about this as Dave and Chris SVL have been entering this
contest for a number of years now. I joined them 4 years ago when we operated GJ2D, and
again 2 years ago at GU8D. This time we wanted to increase our chance of an all out win
and looked at a number of locations, inlcuding Malta and Pantellaria. In fact I spent 2
hours in discusssion at Fredrichshaven last year with Joe IT9BLB, organiser of the IH9P
operation for CQWW SSB. I was very tempted to join them but couldn't justify the amount
of time of work for that, this weekend and the IOTA Contest. (if only!)
We eventually convinced Bob 5B4AGN to host us and thankfully he has done a lot of work on
his LF antennas. We are most grateful for Bob's assistance.
Chris SVL is the electronics expert and is responsible for ensuring we don't blow any
radios up by putting RF into receive antennas! He is also good at finding info off
websites. I just go along to operate!
Dave G3UEG is a dab hand at receive antennas and is also chief planner and statistician.
He has produced a lot of good comparative information for us to digest. What we have
concluded is that Russian based and/or speaking entrants appear to have an advantage. The
possible inference is that there are a large number of Russian operators maybe with old
home made valve gear, maybe even on AM, who support their fellow countrymen. It looks
like our 2 main competitors will be UU7J and P3A, a group of Russians with a big setup on
the north side of the island, (see their website!)
Any support you can give us will be most welcome. Since the contest is now 48 hour I
would think SUNDAY evening will be quite slow.
