[UK-CONTEST] Re: Rule bending

No it's not incredible Andy. Just fact. The FT1000, as opposed to the
FT1000MP, has been around for about 10 years and has been used by many
groups during this time, some of which have either won or been highly
placed. Just fact.

Conversely, both restricted sections have been won by groups using standard
100w radios, so it isn't a pre-condition.

As well as the Atlanta there is the newer FT401/FR401 combo. The tx is is
good for 500w if you have a reasonable supply of tubes for the 24 hours. I
reckon the vfo could be re-built using FETs to give it enough stability for
contest conditions.

Wouldn't know about towers although I am aware of at least one group with an
80ft trailer tower and a battery powered electric winch. Don't know if they
use the full height or not, but I could have a good guess.

I do have to admit though that over last weekend at GB5HQ I noticed the
power had crept up to 401 W and since the antenna was fed with very low-loss
LDF 5-50 I immediately backed off the ALPHA 89a (I do like those red leds)
to dead-on 400w. Didn't want to risk a visit from the Thought Police!

Hi Chris,

I couldn't let this one go without comment. I find this incredible. The
rules in both NFD and SSB Field Day clearly state 100W max. Are you
seriously suggesting that if I get hold of an old KW Atlanta I could run
400W? I think not! Next you'll be telling us you used the full 80-odd ft of
your crank-up because you can't outlaw specific towers.

This is yet another message that something has to be done to redress the
balance with those that don't have access to FT1k's. I suspect these
revelations are more likely to reduce the participants than anything else!

Unless I hear something to the contrary I know what we'll be borrowing come
September!

73,
Andy, G4KNO.
