Sure is!  A ferrite rod antenna or small loop is a good rx antenna for LF 
and pre-amps are easy because cosmic and man-made noise dominate, so the 
pre-amp nf is unimportant. But you can't generate any useful ERP on them 
because they are so inefficient (but as Don says - they are quiet as rx 
antennas).

If you want to get into this LF stuff the book you need to get is ON4UN's 
Low Band Dxing (from RSGB or I saw one on ebay the other day) it is the 
*bible* of 160, 80 & 40. It covers propagation, aerials, operating, and is 
a thoroughly good source book.
