Splits more than 1 KHz can be confusing as to who is calling who.

Typically for CW, a split of only 300-500 Hz in my view is all that is
necessary to maintain the rate
in say CQWW. And crucially it allows the callers to listen for the weak DX
stns exchanges in the
clear.

As a footnote, I think it's a more productive to find a spot higher up the
sub-band where
generally less people hang out and split working can be even more slicker.
