I know that my experience is not as great as many others on this reflector.
But I thought that a far higher number of stations were working split in
this year's contest than I have experienced previously. I know that TO4WW
(FR/J) did it in 2003, but their pile-ups were massive. This year I must
have worked at least 10 stations working split and announcing that they were
doing so, as opposed to the customary practice of just listening slightly up
when the pile-up becomes almost unmanageable. Several were high up in the
band (28.1/21.12...), so it was not a problem and I'm sure increased their
rates and the general satisfaction of those calling. I also noticed it
happening in the bottom 5k of 80m on Sunday eveing as well.
It was new to me, but perhaps I spent more time in S&P mode this year and
just happened to notice it more. If it happens high up in the band,
especially on 10/15m, I don't think that one could argue too strongly
against it.
