I've had Winkey working fine with SD from the USB port of my laptop via a 
USB to COM converter.
I didn't have to do anything special in terms if set up, just configured the 
port and swicthed on Winkey.
You could try powering the Winkey unit from an external source (battery?) 
and see if that works.
You could also try downloading some other free software that will test the 
Winkey unit (eg N1MM).

Drop me a line direct if you would like me to take a closer look at the 
config settings within SD or advice on Winkey set up. I've been using it for 
some time now with few glitches.

As far as I know, Writelog does not support Winkey.
