It does sound like an early Strumech to me. Check that the gate runs 
freely, they have a habit of seizing closed at the most inopportune 
moment.

Talk to the tower manufacturer, now part of the Eliot group and they 
will certainly be able to supply. 01543 502671

If you feel confident / competent to source from a lifting gear supplier 
you will save yourself a lot of money BUT...

Don't let anyone tell you Stainless steel is suitable, it isn't.

Ask the supplier whether you should lubricate the wire, and with what.

Ask the supplier to tell you how long it will last, inspect it regularly 
AND replace it within their recommended period.
