Out of curiosity, has anyone looked at this:

Looks awesome. Pity it's for Mac, but some interesting ideas in there by the
look of it. We need a Windows version!

Actually, what we probably need, platform-independent-wise, is a Web based
logger, XML-based, that could therefore lend itself to single-op, multi-op,
single-site, multi-site, etc, etc. Could run directly on the
contest-sponsor's server, and results could be out in next to no time after
the contest. Anybody starting to develop anything less than this nowadays is
really so 20th-century!

I have used the DX-Net software by this author, and I can recommend it. His
support is good too. He is an active contester himself. As for 'not being
open source' 'missing the target'... whilst I like the notion of open
source, in reality it is a support nightmare, and probably about 2 radio
amateurs in the UK would have the skills or desire to start re-engineering
their logging software. Besides, you yourself have said that a platform
independent piece of software would be difficult to write, let alone
support. I have long time looked for a logger that would support contests
and allow a comments field (for 4m QTH, etc) and bandmap on VHF. I don't
know if this one does, but I'll probably give it a try.

Yet another logging app! Whilst it looks pretty good, I think software
authors are perpetually missing the target. Why is this wheel continually
being re-invented? What I would like to see is an open source logger that is
platform portable. That way you could add any missing features yourself (if
you can write software), and run it on Linux if you like. N1MM is more or
less run open source, but sadly isn't platform portable (Use of VB and MS
Access).

I think a Java based logger would fit the bill. I did a bit of hacking in
Java myself to see, but it's a lot more complex than you might think. It's
become an abandoned project for now because I can't devote the necessary
time to it (bear in mind N1MM runs to about 72,000 lines of code). I had
used the working title 'jlog', but subsequently discovered somone had bagged
that name already <www.jlog.org>! Whilst this is written in Java, it's not
fully open source and isn't really aimed at contesting.

In replying to your post and having a rant, I guess I'm just hoping that
someone might 'take up the baton'.

PS: Glad to see CVRS is resurgent on the contesting front. I was a CVRS
member 25 years ago, where I was first introduced to contesting.
