Hiya Guys
We continued our custom of traveling around Britain for Field Day by
returning to Guernsey again this year. It's a superb place with v.friendly
locals. Indeed meeting up with the GU3HFN/P crowd socially was great was
excellent fun. We managed to get out for a few drinks/noisy meals with them
both on the evening before and the evening after the contest. It has to be
said that though that I fell asleep during supper on the Sunday night. A
reflection on my lack of stamina rather than the company of course!
We entered the restricted section again. Our QTH was a couple of hundred
yards from the sea on very slightly raised land on extreme N/E corner of the
island. A superb location. The rig was an FT1000MP and we used a combination
of switched ATU and Auto ATU to feed a 270' C/F doublet at 35'. We felt we
were getting out really well but HF conditions didn't really do us many
favours.
Propagation and skip meant that we didn't really get much decent PA/ON/DL
portable volume on 20 or especially 15 Metres. Signals from further into
Europe were stronger but not much activity. 28 Mhz produced only a couple of
dozen QSOs. The only ground wave on "ten" being from GU3HFN/P.
But we were delighted to make around 170 QSOs on 160M and 80/40 performed
well too.
The weather was a bit blustery but it only started to rain heavily as we
de-rigged the station. The best bit was the lack of QRN, quite unusual for
field day in our experience. All in all great fun.
As usual the operators were Roger G3SXW, Nigel G3TXF and G3WVG.
The result ...1152 QSOs yielding 4,302 points
