[UK-CONTEST] Contest Style

Actually, it looks as though it has turned in to a contest. Now that is a
shame!!

I think the point we are trying to make is that for most of us contesting is
a perpetual learning game. At least that is what I have always assumed.
Doing a SWAT analysis after each event, seeing how I can improve my
technique, looking at station ergonomics, (in the old days that included how
to move the pencil out of the way of the keyer paddle whilst not having to
let go of it!), making antenna adjustments, refining what I send ie cutting
the waffle (severntee threes old man and good luck in the contest, or on CW,
73, dit-dit, dit-dit), only sending the minimum, etc.

When not seriously taking part I used to listen to the top guys to see what
they did. Seeing how often G3FXB sent his call, how long his CQ was, what
information he sent and what he didn't send.

Perhaps my frustration stems from a feeling that many people don't do these
things but just muddle along without a thought that they are actually in a
competitive situation. Surely anyone entering a contest takes some time
before they actually get stuck in to understand just what makes it tick??

I would add the words "...at all costs..." which is a great pity as this is
just a hobby. Licensees of all ages, experience and operating standards
should enjoy taking part and be forgiven if they depart from what the
regular contest fraternity regard as acceptable. Glass houses and stones
etc. I have in mind particularly the 80MCC events which do seem to have
turned in to a rat race.
