Rather like amateur athletics perhaps.  I don't see my daughter (or any of
her buddies) training daily for her school or county 800m and cross country
events in order "to participate" but rather to see off that nasty piece of
work that edged in front of her last time.  Others enjoy jogging of course.
Sunday morning rag-chew or contest - take your choice; each is a part of our
hobby.
