Ay, you're probably not the only one who thinks that, Graham. Such is life!
There is an accepted way of carrying out a contest QSO, so why does it
have to be changed? It is simple and logical. When I return your initial
call it indicates one of two states, either I have got your callsign
correct and therefore needs no further action on your part, or I have
got your call wrong, in which case you offer a correction. That's what
contesting is all about, efficiently and accurately exchanging information.
As regards rate, well surely that's also what a contest is. Getting as
many contacts in your log in a give amount of time. It's all about
thinking on your feet, working hard, reeling the fish in but throwing
them back as quickly as possible so you can move on to the next catch.
