Winning an RSGB Contest seems a little irrelevant to me. With the
greatest respect to the SGB of which I am a member,
many of their contests are aimed at the Contest beginner - or contests
which give the newcomer to contesting the opportunity to take part
without causing too much grief to the overall effort. Taking part in
and doing well in a major Contest
such as IOTA, ARRL, CQWW is much more of a criteria in my opinion.
At my home QTH i dont have room for 160/80m antennas so have a distinct
disadvantage in AFS and CC and things like ropoco etc. So are you
saying that because I choose not to take part in such Contests I should
be ineligible for IARU?
I don't think so. Radio Contesting is like any other sport. When
represending one's country, you have to put out
the best team available - ask people like Paula Radcliff, Andy Murray,
Sir Steve Redgrave and so on and they will have something to say about
being the best and having a competitive spirit.
Taking part in and listening around in a lot of the Contests, I hear
very little GM activity. You only have to look at the results to see
how many active contesting GMs there really are. I think that speaks
for itself and interest in Contesting in GM can only be described as
minimal. So much for the health of Contesting in GM. RTTY seems to
be the only mode with a growing number of participants....
Thats my 2p worth!

One such goal might have been to represent one's nation in an international contest i.e. IARU champs. I have never advocated that inexperienced ops or casual contesters take part, quite the opposite in fact, let there be a clear criterion for participation and some publicity surrounding the selection process. Not a bad thing?
