Just to balance the debate I'm quite content with the process. No  doubt a 
very large number of people with varying degrees of contest  capability would 
volunteer if it was opened up and then how would the organisers  select the 
teams? Many would have to be disappointed. The current process avoids  that.
 
I operated 40m SSB in 2003 and it was quite a commitment with just three of  
us operating over the 24 hours and particularly with an IOTA  expedition 
shortly afterwards. 
 
I'll be giving the guys my band slot support again this year and hoping for  
all 12 three years in a row on my wet string. The certificates look nice on 
the  shack wall!
