An excellent suggestion from Ian (SEK) imo. Rebranding
with publicity throughout the Commonwealth by liason
with various National Societies. I don't really buy
this Boer War, Botany Bay deportation resentment stuff
though. Take the Commonwealth Games starting this
week(and maybe we missed a trick here this year with
this and our own events occuring so close). All
eligible nations will be putting out their best
athletes who will be filled with national pride and
busting a gut, doing their level best to make their
country top of the tree. These youngsters will be nth
generation of original settlers who won't give a hoot
about old prejudices.
What needs to be done is to get the message out to all
hams in these countries that they are representing
their country as well as themselves in this enjoyable
event. CQWW have a club category, we cdxc members are
encouraged to show this membership on their entry so
why not take some ideas from this. Have an award to be
competed for by the combined totals of the top three
entrants from each country. Something like this where
people are battling for national pride as well as
individual awards could give a kick start to reviving
the interest in this established event which is well
worth examination of all possible ideas to prevent it
falling into oblivion, further the top three uk stns
could have a real chance to win it. I could imagine
existing ops in each country approaching other
contesters they know who have never entered previously
or even thought about it. By golly the competitive
team spirit is still alive and well in the
commonwealth just look at the rugby, cricket etc, why
not ham radio?
I can't agree about re-structuring the format though,
I used to think that some extra incentive for uk
stations would be an improvement but now feel that
would destroy the uniqueness of the event. By the
creation of the trophies the instigators of this test
obviously considered that within the contest the uk
stns would have their own contest and I feel that
intent should still hold good.
In response to SJJ's thoughts about the cq'ing
procedure, sorry Chris but we would never stop ops
from calling cq beru, it's like Horlicks, been there
for ever and will always be there. Why does it really
matter ? It doesn't have to mean anything, it is a
word many know and increasingly few understand but
they don't care what it stands for. Participants know
it's a message they are looking for and non
participants, the majority of experienced ones anyway,
know to stay away from. It's like WSEM, I haven't a
clue what it stands for and I don't care, I do know
that it is a Russian contest for Russians only and
that is good enough and I leave them alone.
Despite the comments we have had about "time this one
was buried" this reflector has seen more postings
about this event than any contest for a long time, so
not quite time for the mortuary I think.
If all of us can toss our ideas in here it will give
hfcc something to pick the bones from.
