It's impossible to predict whether you're going to run into trouble with 
your chosen contest call. M8C seemed ok, but a huge number of people 
copy it as M6C, can't fathom why.

As to the FT1000MP, most of the time I run with 6-12dB of attenuation 
and frequently with the RF gain backed off as well. Press the dial lock 
button and make use of the RIT. It's sometimes useful to use the shift 
and width controls (shift especially) to reduce chatter from a station 
that's closer than he ought to be. Don't bother with the DSP, it's 
rubbish IMO.
