Hi Dave
We at Newbury - (usually G5XV but this can cause difficulties) had some
trouble with G3N in 2005, hence the change to G7N in 2006. Only slightly
better....
Re Contest rigs, I have quite a modest and oldish TRX - the FT-920. Its SSB
performance has been greatly improved by adding a 1.8KHz filter in tandem
with the original filter using the INRAD board. Roofing filters, strong
signal handling and o/p spectra are however not the best and of course it
only has one RX available. What is good is the built in voice recorder and
the display - while most of the layout allows for intuitive operation.
Following your mention of the 1000MP shortcomings, I must say I find the
FT-920 dsp is excellent with simple controls. The auto-notch takes out all
the tones, the NR really reduces noise without imposing stangeness on the
signal and the upper/lower cuts work well. You can take CW width down to
about 50Hz improving the CW performance of the Yaesu 500Hz CW IF filter I
have fitted. Having such a good dsp algorithm and hardware in this rig, I
wonder why other rigs cannot at least do the same? Seems to be true that
there is always something that goes awry in subsequent radios, even though
it is quite possible to get near enough to perfection in some aspects
before! What do I buy next?
