[UK-CONTEST] PL259 advice please.

I don't think you will find them in the UK.  The regular big name amateur 
radio outlets just stock junk apparently meant for the CB market.  I came 
across the following whilst viewing a six metre site:

The RF Connection www.therfc.com in the USA.

I bought a four of the Amphenol types and four of the Teflon/gold.  The 
latter at about 1/3rd the price are just as good.  Good quality, good 
price, good service.
