These things are really confusing anyway in unskilled (or perhaps tired) 
hands, especially when they're set on auto-repeat.  Several times at the 
weekend the thing would re-start after a call and then the guy would 
belatedly realise and cut it off in mid-stream to respond.  Wondered what on 
earth was happening at the time but all is suddenly clear - thanks Mike!
