Thanks for all the comments it does seem as if I am in the minority.

However perhaps I didn't make it clear enough what the problem is with using 
Canada for C.

The whole point of the phonetic alphabet is that you should be triggered to 
the correct letter from a partial recognition of the word. Hearing "k...na" 
through the noise does not trigger a soft consanant like C it triggers a K.
