[UK-CONTEST] VHF equipment

Hi Daniel. An interesting question!
I have an old ft225rd with a mutek board. It used to be the, er, bees knees. The rig must be approaching 30 years old now and really isn't up to the job of serious contesting or dxing. A couple of years ago we compared it with a Yaesu ft847 and the newer rig was more sensitive. Perhaps not quite as bombproof with strong local signals but you can quickly adjust the 847 in the 'field' if that becomes a problem. The 847 does a decent job on 50, 144 and 432 Mhz. It operates on 70 Mhz too but fairly poorly. There is a mod by Keith, G4FUF which looks interesting to improve 4m performance.
Others use hf rigs and transverters to excellent effect and I am sure will chip in.
For backpacking it is hard to beat the later models of ft290 for an effective, simple package though you may like the ft817 which does lots more bands but is heavy on battery consumption!
I was struck in this month's 2m activity contest just how much activity there is. Loads of people coming on and having a go! Wonderful. We need to try and get the same numbers on for events like last weekend's 2m trophy, which by contrast seemed to have less support from the UK.

Dear Contesters,
what VHF equipment do you use? I hear that the FT-225R is very good,
but rather old. Do people still use them for serious contesting? Or do you
have a transverter? Which one? And what linear, if you use any? Do you use
different equipment for /P outdoor operating?
