It can give a small but often critical advantage. The fact that most
unassisted ops score higher is because, by and large, the unassisted ops
are the more dedicated and skilful operators, with the better stations.
There are some honourable exceptions to this rule, such as K3WW, but you
can bet that if K1AR, K5ZD, N5TJ, G3SXW etc. etc. were to enter assisted
their score would increase over what was possible without assistance.
How many times have you been tuning for a mult, come across a station
which you think might be a mult - e.g. sending zone 8 in CQWW - but the
idiot doesn't send his callsign for QSO after QSO. A glance at the
packet screen would tell you what you wanted to know. This is a simple
illustration of how packet is bound to be a help. Without it, you've got
to decide either to hang around until he signs his call, or move on and
risk missing a mult.
The solution is not to force everyone to be assisted but to educate
these idiots and yes, if necessary, send CL? on their frequency if they
don't sign often enough. The best ops - G3SXW a supreme example -
already sign their callsign with great regularity so that the problem
doesn't arise.
