Another source is the initial key down when the ALC is being over 
worked due to excessive tx gain.  On the MkV that's easy to adjust 
from the menu (see http://www.w8ji.com/ft1000mk_v.htm).  I set mine 
up as per Tom's instructions and cured an occasional linear trip 
problem. I surmise that there was a peak of RF output when the key 
went down that the ALC could not react to.
