[UK-CONTEST] BA Luggage Allowance - Sports Equipment?

Hi All
 
It turns out that having fixed our yearly sojourn at the holiday house in Sweden, the dates fall across the IOTA contest... and I'll be staying on a Swedish Island in the Kalmar Group.
 
So with that in mind I'm thinking about taking some equipment for a lightweight ("Alpine style" in climbing parlance) contest operation (we are going as a family with the usual paraphernalia) but want to know what any of you might have experienced with the BA luggage policy on one bag plus "sports equipment" and how to pack or describe things... the main issue being the need to take some kind of pole (spider pole etc) or vertical.
