I totally agree Paul.
Whilst many of us had and still have concerns regarding the recent
choices of editor and the lack of understanding within certain elements
of the Society of the value of contesting, most people will agree that
over the years the RSGB has been held in high esteem by many overseas
organisations. Not only that, the contributions by paid staff and
volunteers have been and continue to be immense. To name but a few areas
that come to mind - IARU, PLT, Planning, EMC and Contesting. In the past
we have been lucky to have the experience and expertise of numerous well
known UK amateurs including G3MXJ, G3PJT, G3BJ, G4JKS, again to name but
a few. Incidental expenses may have been claimed but most if not all of
their work would have been voluntary. Look at Radcom and see the
callsign of contributors, many of whom are on this Reflector. Things may
have changed since "my day" but I certainly did not attend any "jollies"
during my 15 years as a member of HFCC including 6 as Chair of HFCC.
Occasional train fare to London, maybe, but certainly my weekends at say
HF Convention were very much at my expense. The enjoyment I got was
payment enough. Financially I estimate it cost me at least £200 per year
out of my own pocket, but it was my choice so I have never grumbled.
Perhaps the two most well known current "volunteers" are Colin G3PSM and
Don G3XTT. The hours that they must freely donate for our benefit must
be incredible. For little thanks much of the time.
I recall one event where my wife was working from home that day and I
was at work. A member was very irate that I was not available to answer
his query! How many times did I chat with Chris GM3WOJ regarding the
introduction of Special Contest Calls? I did not complain and still
don't, but it does get up my nose when people make sweeping statements
about things they just can't be bothered to understand!!
To Colin G3PSM. Well done mate!
