[UK-CONTEST] Software Poll

Ian,

Whilst I agree, in principle, with your proposal that using the same
operating software for contests and for general logging is the best
approach, I have yet to come across a contest program which is adequate for
general logging and management of DXCC, IOTA and QSLing, for example.

I use N1MM for contests and Logger32 for managing my station log. It is very
easy to export the contest QSOs, after a contest, from N1MM and then import
into Logger32.

Both N1MM and Logger32 are free which has some bearing on my choice being a
pensioner but both are excellent programs in their own right.

So the challenge is to find a contest program which is as good as N1MM for
contesting and as good as Logger32 for general station logging. I know there
are quite a few excellent programs in either category but I know of none
which can do both well.

However, I will be happy if I am proved wrong!

There are lots of different personal viewpoints on this.

For me, the most important thing is to use the SAME operating software
all the time, by using the contesting software in its 'General Logging'
mode outside of contests. I have always found that far more important
than the actual choice of software.

Because you only have to learn one set of operating reflexes - every day
you go on the air, you are training yourself for contesting.

It also avoids those Friday-evening "config panics". You've had days,
weeks and months to tweak the hardware/software configuration so it's
just right for you, and the whole setup process stays fresh and
familiar.

Compared to that, the specific choice of software is almost incidental.
