Thanks Neil. Looks as though our general usage of gin pole system is
incorrect as I found on my Google search.
Peter's reference was interesting in that if I asked the landowner on
whose land my derrick would fall, I am sure he would let me drive tothe
required spot, though I am not sure I want to change the Freelander for
a minivan at present!
Anyway I found this, which does answer my real question -

I just wanted to be sure which pulley the rope is permanently attached to.
