I think one advantage of using a name is that it is quickly obvious to the  
casual listener what the basic exchange format is. I have been doing a lot  
of 2m contests recently and find that even there a significant proportion  
(about 5%) dont know their locator - I suspect the proportion would be  
much higher on 80m. It is also nice to get people's names. Of course, most  
contest programs will autofill them if set-up that way.

I find it bizzare that people will change their names to attempt to gain  
extra points (and would like to say that I have always used Ric as my name  
on CW!).
