When I was watching PSK31 on 20m yesterday, I saw some stuff from a K1... who said he was 85 years old! That's even older than you, Chris. :0) I bet HE can work a talking handbag!
I understand you can get some stuff in Boots that stops the nosebleeds...
I use my hand-held a lot, just not for 2m or 70cm - it's always monitoring the Coastguard!
When I get my enormous estate with multiple towers, there will definitely be one with little Bonsai yagis on top.

Actually I still have the little Alinco DR112 that I used to use for DX
Cluster, but never managed to work out all the buttons!
I kept it in case an aircraft from the local aerodrome crashed and we
needed emergency comms in the village, but then I wouldn't know if I was
on a repeater thingy or not. Like you say, all too much for me! It's
available for sale if anyone wants it
