Purely for info, I don't get this problem with my DX Doubler and
FT1000mps.

I am also very interested in the solution, if any, to this problem. It
caused a very heated argument last SSB FD amongst our group!

I also experience it at home. Using a RigExpert Plus for the CAT and CW,
rig audio fed into laptop soundcard ports. Happens if I use either
Elecraft K2 or Icom 756ProII.

So ho is the guru with the answer. It is annoying in that when you are
trying to hear a weak one, this mushy ticking is there all the time.
