I've read this thread with interest, I can certainly back up John MM0JXIs
comments. I co-ordinate the HF side of things for GM2T but as well as that, I'm
involved heavily with licence training from Foundation to Advanced.
Both Bob (GM4UYZ) and I are avid contesters and use our contesting and
special event station experience to deliver many of the points that need to be
raised throughout the training process. Through these examples and the
enthusiasm shown, many of the newly licenced amateurs do come along to the contests to
see if its as good fun and challenging as we describe it to be.
This along with the many stories told at our monthly meetings, over and over
again about our escapades whilst contesting.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that we portray contesting as fun and a
great platform to learn about propagation and gain and improve upon operating
skills. It seems to work as in this years IOTA team we have 3 members who were
recent MM3s and are now MM0s and are into all kinds of contesting.

To me, that puts all the debate in to some perspective and should give us
all encouragement. Well done and thank you for sharing it with us.
I sincerely hope that RadCom would run a short article describing your
experience. I would be happy to add some material from experiences here,
when I have opened up the shack for members of the Carlisle Club to come and
have a go at some contesting in a secure environment.
