Ken,
I have been watching this thread for some time and this is the first time that I felt I could agree with an opinion expressed.
IMHO my call is personal to me, amongst the 5 billion or so inhabitants of this planet there is only one G3SVD, I know that there are others with my name and with different names but the same initials. I have a personalised number plate G3SVD, that is similarly personal to me. It makes me chuckle at some of the illegal alterations some people make to their plates to make them look particular.
Occasionally my call gets confused with others, especial with SED on phone but that is about it. No, I am G3SVD until I become G3SVD (SK). Then maybe my daughter who has M3 plus the same suffix may want to upgrade and take my call, but that will be her decision and I won't be around anyhow.

In a word why? Apart from keeping a call of a SK family member alive or the
club use of a SK member e.g. G5UM I can't think of any justification for
changing or re-activating a callsign at least until all of the available
callsigns have been used up, for me it would be the same as changing my
name. I have the impression that some people like to have a call that
pre-dates their 'real' call to make it appear that they've held a licence
for much longer than they actually have, perhaps it's all just a bit of an
ego trip?
The use a two or three letter call to gain a possible advantage during a
contest should be banned or for a 'special event'.
