I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I found that the rig 
would key perfectly well using an opto connected to the ptt line on the 
mic socket but not on the packet interface on the rear panel. I resorted 
to a DIL relay as other options were limited at the time.

If your friend wants to use data modes that require USB then this may be 
of interest
