Following a similar format to previous years in CQWW Phone, we set the
station up for Multi-2. Colin, G6LSO, now a regular attendee was working on
Saturday, so did not arrive until Saturday pm. Unfortunately, no-one else
from the club visited at all during the weekend. A couple had run in the
local half marathon the weekend previously and were reluctant to leave the
family for another weekend.. Others did the sensible thing and avoided
travelling in the appalling weather conditions here Cumbria. I live on top
of a hill, but there was bad flooding all around and the winds were gale
force until about 11pm on Saturday, when they dropped to a gusty 25/30mph.
Both Butternuts developed a fault on 40m. So we found ourselves building a
40m quarter wave vertical in my garage at 11pm on Saturday and then lashing
it to a post in the torrential rain. It resonated on 7.3Mhz, so a quick
trip to the end of the field, an extra foot of wire and all was well. It
was on the same feeder as the 80m vertical, so we were somewhat compromised.
Our operations were also curtailed over night as the mast was not wound up
(because of the gales) and the Inverted L for 160m was only 25 feet high.
Lots of good laughs and the Yeehaas for each mult (double Yeeahas for
double-mults) just seemed to get funnier as the sleep deprivation set in. A
highlight for me was persuading Colin to run in the final hour of the
contest on 80m - his first go at running in CQWW. He worked 60 stations in
that last hour and was spotted three (I think) times.
The score is modest by comparison with others already posted on here - well
done everyone. We did work over 100 countries on 20m. That was pleasing,
given that we had set ourselves a target to achieve DXCC on at least one
band. The country count will go up slightly, because the YU8s were not
recognised as separate mults.
The target for next year is to get more of the recently licensed amateurs in
Carlisle to "come and have a go".
