When the 'chat' was 'in-band' and there were more folks making Qs, I believe 
this generated interest amongst others.  Those that were grabbed by this, 
joined in the game and became 'hooked' as it were.  The club talk got you to 
listen there Paul and then the 'activity' created the 'pull'.  Downright dangerous 
equipment configurations leading to near-death experiences didn't stop me from 
getting that bigger sig on the band, so I know what you mean.  There are many 
others here who have done likewise of course, although I'm somewhat more 
circumspect now :>)  

Speaking as someone who knocked on front doors to get started in amateur 
radio (sorry if that was your door!), the 'push' thing has always been a bit alien 
to me, as a way of getting started.  That said, I did need that to get the CW 
done though 20 yrs later (thanks Eric!) and like you Paul, will be ever 
grateful for the elmering I have received along the way.
