Yes, I held one of those numbers.

I was licensed at 14, but held the RSGB number ARS40411 before that.  I 
still have some blank QSL cards that I made myself using a stencil set and a 
map of Cornwall that I drew with the aid of tracing paper.  One of my first 
direct QSLs was to Mike GU4EON and he wrote a long letter back about the 
benefits of running his doublet over water.  It was nice to meet him in 
person many years later and have a few pints.

Then again, nostalgia is not what it used to be.,
