Lick your finger and use it to bridge between the inside of the body and
the pick-up contact (make sure that both places where skin touches metal
are wet). If the meter coil is intact, the needle will move - very
little, but enough to see.
Also try to throw the needle further up scale to see if it might stick
somewhere.
