I had been wondering why there should be a difference in the requirement for a PPL and a CPL, (documented at http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=49&pagetype=90&pageid=533) we all have to be able to listen to the radio after all. But the reason is, the more complex test is for "professional pilots, and private pilots with an instrument rating," and so to bring the discussion back towards being on topic for this list: It's to be able to copy CW!! It's so that you can be sure to get the morse ident on radio beacons. (hence the point about PPL with and IR)
